{"id":2851,"date":"2014-02-22T12:54:27","date_gmt":"2014-02-22T11:54:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/users.cg.tuwien.ac.at\/zsolnai\/?p=2851"},"modified":"2015-09-26T16:40:58","modified_gmt":"2015-09-26T14:40:58","slug":"on-peer-review-and-paper-preprint-dissemination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/users.cg.tuwien.ac.at\/zsolnai\/on-peer-review-and-paper-preprint-dissemination\/","title":{"rendered":"On peer review and paper preprint dissemination"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I have recently come across two great pieces:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Professor Larry Wasserman and Walter Noll suggests a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stat.cmu.edu\/~larry\/Peer-Review.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">simple two-tier publishing system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">CERN physicists show statistics on the viability of arXiv in High Energy Physics (HEP) research, where <a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/vc\/arxiv\/papers\/0906\/0906.5418v1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">they found the following<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>as of 2008, more than 95% of the peer-reviewed HEP journal articles are also published on the arXiv,<\/li>\n<li>the highest impact factor articles are both submitted to a journal and published on arXiv,<\/li>\n<li>articles that are submitted to arXiv before review obtain 20% of their first 2-year citation count by the time the journal article is accepted, and they also enjoy more than five times as many citations during this 2-year period,<\/li>\n<li>scientists read the arXiv more often than journal websites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Physicists have been doing this for more than two decades now. If we are to improve our publishing system in computer graphics research, this is definitely a promising direction.
